Eastern Maine Skippers Program Release Regional Final Presentations Schedule
[STONINGTON, ME, May 2, 2019] – The Eastern Maine Skippers Program (EMSP) is excited to announce its Regional Final Presentations schedule. Participating high schools will present at one of three separate regional events scheduled to take place later this month at various venues throughout Downeast Maine.
Region 1 High Schools: Jonesport-Beals High School, Narraguagus High School, Sumner Memorial High School Tuesday, May 21 at 5:00 pm; Seaworthy Event Center, 23 Main St, Milbridge, ME
Region 2 High Schools: Deer Isle-Stonington High School, North Haven Community School, Vinalhaven School Thursday, May 23 at 5:00 pm; Opera House Arts, 1 Opera House Ln, Stonington, ME
Region 3 High Schools: Ellsworth High School, George Stevens Academy, Mount Desert Island High School Tuesday, May 28 at 5:00 pm; Faith Community Fellowship, 57 Bar Harbor Rd, Trenton, ME
Over 90 students from nine high schools, will present on various topics related to commercial fisheries while answering this year’s project topic, “How can technology contribute to a safe, healthy, and sustainable fishing industry?” Students spend the school year identifying fisheries issues and researching a pathway to possible solutions, and then share their findings with an audience during final presentations. EMSP provides students with opportunities to go out into the field, working closely with industry-related professionals, including local fishermen, state-scientists, supporting-businesses and more.
Deer Isle-Stonington High School senior and skipper student, Caleb Hardie, explains the value of presenting in front of his community, “Sharing our projects and having the opportunity to present to an audience, could have an affect on the future of Maine’s fishing industry.”

All three events are free to attend and open to the public. Local area fishermen, business-owners, and community members are encouraged to attend.
About Eastern Mainer Skippers Program The Eastern Maine Skippers Program (EMSP) is a collaborative program between Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries and the Rural Aspirations Project, serving over 90 students in fishing communities across Eastern Maine. The program provides aspiring commercial fishermen and fisheries-focused high school students with the skills to be successful in a time of rapid environmental and regulatory change.
