Carl Wilson
Board MemberCarl has directed the Bureau of Maine Science since 2015, and has been the primary science lead for the Department of Marine Resources. As director, Carl oversees a staff of 65 who work within two research Divisions (Biological & Assessment or Anadromous Fisheries & Restoration), education, administrative support and facilities management. Carl’s marine ecology and fisheries background and close working relationship with the Maine lobster fishery formed the basis for his research over sixteen years as the lead lobster biologist within the DMR. In addition to his duties for the State and Interstate Agencies, Carl has been the lead PI on several collaborative research projects with multiple academic/research institutions and over 100 directly participating industry stakeholders. These projects have investigated the spatial and temporal changes in the lobster fishery, the relationship between the number of traps in the fishery and the associated catch and the design and experimental application of a ‘crab only’ trap. Carl brings a broad interest in fisheries science, habitat mapping, and oceanography to complex resource and environmental issues.
