Overview

Collaborative research in the fishing industry involves a unique recipe that blends stakeholders from scientific institutions, regulatory agencies, and most importantly fishermen. MCCF’s research programs start with fishermen’s observations and questions about the marine ecosystem and emerging issues. From there, we add the rigor of some of the top academic institutions in the Northeast on the frontline of cutting edge research in ecosystems, fishery populations, and climate science. The result is a research platform that collects valuable data on real fishing vessels using local ecological knowledge, informed by federal, state and local government, and analyzed by some of the top scientists in the field. These data and findings are used to form and shape fisheries management in a way that builds trust and mutual understanding between fishermen, scientists, and policy makers.
